Mike Norvell and the Seminoles are getting the perfect update they need weeks before they play Miami
Mike Norvell and the Seminoles are hoping to have LaWayne McCoy back soon.
Week 3 is a bye week for the Florida State Seminoles, but head coach Mike Norvell is getting some good updates on wide receiver LaWayne McCoy and his availability as he recovers from an injury.
“LaWayne got his first most extended work today [Tuesday] and so hopefully coming back tomorrow, continue to ramp that up and have him available. He’s a tier one type of guy for us,” Norvell told reporters Tuesday regarding the downfield passing game.
Florida State plays Kent State next week, then Virginia, and then the Miami Hurricanes after that. So, eventually, they will need all hands on deck, especially in the passing game. Getting this news is huge for Norvell and the Seminoles.
Mike Norvell will need LaWayne McCoy as a ‘tier 1′ WR badly for the Seminoles’ offense
In the Seminoles’ first game, they did not throw the ball a ton. In fact, they simply ran it down the Alabama Crimson Tide’s throat. They had 230 rushing yards to their 152 passing yards. In Week 2, the passing game was better, but that’s against one of the weakest opponents they will play all year long, if not the weakest opponent. Against East Texas A&M, FSU had 362 passing yards.
As they progress throughout the season and start playing conference games, the passing offense will need to get better, and Norvell knows that, too.
“We are going to be physical, we are going to establish the run, but we’re also going to throw the ball vertically down the field. That’s something I think our guys have embraced in the first game, but you felt the growth of that part of it offensively [in the second game], and it showed up with a lot of explosive plays,” Norvell said.
Norvell has mentioned McCoy is one of the Seminoles’ “tier one” wide receivers, so getting him back would obviously be huge for the offense. As a true freshman last year, in that terrible offense, McCoy only had six catches for 52 yards all year long. But when you watched him closely, you could see just how good he could be.
The Seminoles are ready to see that with this iteration of the offense.
