Even coming off a season where the national championship was almost within reach, the Texas Longhorns have seen a half-dozen talented players hit the transfer portal. Texas' depth and starting lineup took hits this week as star cornerback Terrance Brooks and running back Savion Red made themselves available for contact. Freshman offensive tackle Payton Kirkland quickly jetted to Colorado when the portal opened.
Former Texas star defensive lineman Charles Omenihu took to X to voice his feelings on the matter. He stated: "Yall boys don’t start that portal entering BS ! Texas was gone get back to where it’s loaded with talent don’t start that BS NOW !"
Omenihu played four years at Texas under Charlie Strong and Tom Herman from 2015-2019 and had quite a successful career in Austin. He finished with a breakout 2018 campaign, totaling 18 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. The Houston Texans drafted him 161st overall.
He spent two seasons with the Texans before being traded to San Francisco in 2021. Then, Omenihu signed with the Chiefs last offseason and won his first Super Bowl in 2023. He has 18.5 career sacks in six seasons.
The 6-foot-5-inch, 280-pounder is one of the few standout NFL players from Texas, but that will change soon. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has brought the Longhorns back from the dead with his blend of recruiting prowess and on-field coaching ability. The Longhorns are ranked in the top four teams in way-too-early polls.
Losing Brooks to the portal is a blow, but Red and Kirkland are more depth issues than anything tangible. Sophomore RB Ky Woods is also in the portal, but the combination of Jaydon Blue and CJ Baxter will be enough for the Longhorns to rely upon. They'll surely nab another player from the portal as well.
Young defenders Zac Swanson, S'Maje Burrell, J'Mond Tapp, and Billy Walton are also looking for new homes. Former Arizona senior DL Bill Norton has already committed to Texas, shoring up the unit.
While I love Omenihu's passion for his alma mater, it's hard to blame any player for entering the portal. With only one chance to make a mark in college, guys must see the field to live their dreams. There are also individuals who might need to move for family or personal reasons.
Surely, this is just a call for the troops to rally and stay close as the team enters what figures to be a difficult transition year. Based on last year, the high expectations are justified, but replacing the receiving corps and defensive line is not a small challenge.
