The NCAA transfer portal has been a hot topic of conversation the last couple of weeks since it opened. We have seen over 1,000 talented college football players enter, some transferring up, and others transferring down. With the portal closing soon, we are getting a deep understanding of what the landscape is going to look like ultimately.
One of the more intriguing offensive players who has entered the portal recently is Tulane star running back Makhi Hughes. An underappreciated standout in the college football landscape, Hughes has been one of the best runners nationally the last two seasons. The demand for the Green Wave star is extremely high right now.
Since he has entered the portal, Hughes has heard from a long list of prominent programs. According to On3, there are three programs that are separating themselves for Hughes. Those schools are Ole Miss, Colorado, and Duke.
Hughes has been a workhorse for the Green Wave the last two seasons. During that span, Hughes rushed for 2,779 yards and 22 touchdowns, averaging just under 100 yards per contest. While not used a ton as a pass receiver, Hughes did manage to also haul in 30 receptions for 243 yards and two more scores.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Hughes was rated as a three-star recruit coming out of Huffman High School. The 5-11, 210-pound runner opted for Tulane over offers from Florida State, Kansas, Houston, Marshall, Western Kentucky, Appalachian State, Troy, UAB, Army, Charlotte, Austin Peay, Samford, UT Martin. Yale, and Dartmouth.
Outside of the raw talent, Hughes also has two years of eligibility remaining. That makes him an even more attractive investment for a prospective program. Duke is a sleeper to watch in this conversation with former Tulane signal caller Darian Mensah having already transferred over since the portal opened.
