Comment from elite 5-star recruit shows why Kirby Smart needs to avoid making the change Georgia fans are calling for

Georgia Bulldogs fans haven't been shy this offseason about calling for head coach Kirby Smart to move on from offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.

Bobo, Smart's former teammate at Georgia, returned to Athens in 2022 as an offensive analyst before taking over as the offensive coordinator when Todd Monken left for a job with the Baltimore Ravens.

The Bulldogs had the No. 5 scoring offense in the nation under Bobo in 2023. This past season, Georgia had the No. 38 scoring offense in the nation.

The downtick in production wasn't totally Bobo's fault. While the play-calling could've been better at times, there were also plenty of frustrating drops from wide receivers that stalled drives. That's why Georgia went out this offseason and improved their wide receiver room, landing Micah Bell, Zachariah Branch, and Noah Thomas as wide receiver transfer additions.

Replacing Bobo wouldn't guarantee an increase in offensive production. Ultimately, many of the Bulldogs' issues came down to execution, something that's been a rarity during Smart's tenure. I wouldn't bet on that continuing to be an issue into 2025, even if Bobo returns.

Comment from elite 5-star QB Jared Curtis is a big reason why Kirby Smart should stick with Mike Bobo

2026 five-star quarterback Jared Curtis is one of the most coveted recruits in the nation.

Curtis, 6-foot-4/225 lbs from Nashville, TN, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 1 quarterback in the nation and the No. 4 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class. He was committed to Georgia for seven months before re-opening his recruitment last fall.

Georgia is one of six programs still in the mix for Curtis. And one reason why is because of his important relationship with Bobo.

“Georgia speaks for itself,” said Curtis to On3. “I’ve built a relationship with Coach Bobo and Coach Smart and they plan on coming to the house as well. So I’m excited about that.”

“My relationship with the coaches, Coach Bobo and Coach Gummy (Montgomery VanGorder) most importantly," added Curtis while discussing his recruitment. "I think they’re a powerhouse and they have great coaches all around. They have the players up there and they’re very disciplined.”

The battle for Curtis is a fierce one. Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, Oregon, and South Carolina are also in the mix for the five-star quarterback.

Alabama, Ohio State, and Oregon, specifically, will be tough to beat in this battle. If Bobo leaves and Curtis doesn't gel with the new offensive coordinator, it could be one of those programs that surges in this battle.

Is it worth it to possibly miss out on the top quarterback in the nation just to make a change at offensive coordinator that may or may not work out?

Maybe. Maybe Smart replaces Bobo and Curtis loves the new play-caller and commits to Georgia (again). Or maybe Smart hires a new offensive coordinator and the offense regresses and the Bulldogs miss out on Curtis.

The safe route is to stick with Bobo and hope that Georgia can land Curtis. Remember, this program was potentially a Carson Beck injury away from advancing to the College Football Playoff semifinals. It wasn't Georgia's best season, but it was a better season than almost every other program in the nation had.
