ESPN’s Pete Thamel confirmed on Monday that a key Tennessee Vols starter will be out for the matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday.
Thamel reported that Vols cornerback Jermod McCoy will be out against the Bulldogs.
McCoy, who is being predicted as a first-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, tore his ACL this past offseason.
There was some speculation that McCoy, who returned to practice in August, could make his debut against Georgia.
Instead, it looks like he will be out for at least another week.
Jermod McCoy isn’t the only Vols cornerback who will miss the game against Georgia
Thamel also reported that Vols starting cornerback Rickey Gibson will miss the game against Georgia.
Gibson sustained an injury in Tennessee’s season-opening win against the Syracuse Orange. He didn’t play in the Vols’ win against East Tennessee State last weekend.
With McCoy and Gibson sidelined, Colorado transfer Colton Hood and true freshman Ty Redmond will start at cornerback.
The Vols have a couple of other injured players who could return this weekend against the Bulldogs.
Defensive lineman Jaxson Moi missed the East Tennessee State game due to an injury he sustained against Syracuse. On3’s Chris Low reported last week that Moi has a chance to return against Georgia.
Additionally, true freshman right tackle David Sanders Jr. could make his debut for the Vols against Georgia.
Sanders was a late scratch against Syracuse after getting banged up in practice. The former five-star recruit was held out of the East Tennessee State game, despite reports that indicated he would play.
“Anticipated him being ready. Ultimately, medical decided for him, for us, it probably wasn’t the best move to play him today,” said Vols head coach Josh Heupel when asked about Sanders after Tennessee’s win against East Tennessee State.
Tennessee and Georgia are set to kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday in Knoxville.
