Notre Dame football isn’t finished with talented running back targets based on most recent recruiting news
Notre Dame football still has their eyes set on another talented running back recruit.
Notre Dame football received some great news recently when 2027 four-star Waco (Texas) Midway running back Lathan Whisenton opted for the Fighting Irish over Florida and Texas Tech, among many others. With how well head coach Marcus Freeman and running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider have recruited the running back position recently, it gives you great comfort that the Texas star is going to help continue a great trend in the backfield.
Even with the commitment of Whisenton and the fact that every running back in the room for Notre Dame has eligibility past the 2026 season, it appears that the Irish staff still has interest in adding a second running back. Fellow four-star Duncan (SC) Byrnes running back David Segarra III also made the trip to South Bend for an unofficial visit this past weekend. Segarra enjoyed it so much that he is already planning a return trip to campus.
According to Kyle Kelly from Blue and Gold, Segarra has set up an official visit to Notre Dame on June 19-21. This offers a great opportunity for the Irish staff to lock down back-to-back elite running back duos. Segarra is another impressive runner with a great blend of power and explosiveness. While I like Whisenton quite a bit, Segarra has been my top realistic running back option on the board for a while now.
David Segarra’s recruiting background
Segarra is considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Segarra is currently rated as the No. 145 overall player, the No. 7 running back, and the No. 3 player from the state of South Carolina for the 2027 recruiting class.
While Segarra’s recruiting rankings are a bit all over the place, he has been in heavy demand by some of the top programs in all of college football. Some of the top offers for the South Carolina star include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, Clemson, Indiana, Florida State, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Boston College, UCF, and Stanford, among others.
As a junior this past season, Segarra put together a tremendous season for Byrnes. In 11 games played, the 5-10, 200-pound runner managed to rush for 1,460 yards and 17 touchdowns, while averaging 8.4 yards per carry. Segarra also hauled in 19 receptions for 198 yards and four more scores. The South Carolina standout is an impressive combination of explosiveness and vision.
