There have only been a few college football players who saw the discussion around them swell to an abnormal level of celebrity that even non-sports fans know them. Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Reggie Bush, and Johnny Manziel captured the hearts and hate of many throughout their collegiate days, and their dominance on the field helped set the stage for all of the attention. It wasn’t even about just the media, as fans flocked to events and social media.
Now, Ohio State star sophomore wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is entering similarly rare air with the public. At least that’s what one Ohio State prognisticator has said. While it’s not a surprise Buckeye faithful are excited and will support a player who sealed its first national championship win since 2014, the mania might just be getting started.
After all, Smith led the Big Ten with 1,315 yards and 15 receiving touchdowns last year. It’s hard to imagine his numbers getting better unless new starting quarterback Julian Sayin leads a heavier passing attack and the Buckeyes return to the title game. But that doesn’t mean Smith won’t make enough highlights to earn a trip to the New York Heisman Trophy ceremony.
10TV Columbus’ Adam King shared the following as Smith arrived at Dick’s Sporting Good at Polaris Mall for a grand opening event.
“I’ve never seen anything like this for a college football player. Jeremiah Smith’s stardom has reached insane levels. There are thousands of people at Polaris to get a picture. Heard someone say “kids 19 years old and he’s my hero”.
The large retail store was filled to the brim with fans eager to get a photo of the 6-foot-3, 220-pound physical phenom. It’s clear he’s reached mega star status, and the 19-year-old better get used to being treated like this.
