Brian Kelly loves it when he sees his players succeed. And one player who has forced his way into a huge role and immense consistent success this year for LSU has been true freshman running back Caden Durham. It seems with each passing week he just gets better. So, this week Brian Kelly couldn't help but share what makes this young star so special when meeting with the media.
The high pedigree four star speedster of a running back dominated Arkansas this past week for 108 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns. As if that wasn't impressive enough, apparently Caden Durham wasn't even fully healthy as he did it:
"I'm really impressed with a freshman running back that is not playing at 100%, but in there playing with grit and toughness and the kind of resolve that he has. A lot of guys would not be in the game. I mean, he's playing at about 80% to 85%, but he's got great vision, he's got toughness, keeps his legs moving. And again, injuries are hard to deal with at any position, but when you're a running back, and you've got an injury, and you're still fighting through it, I think it says a lot about the young man. I'm really proud of him."
Brian Kelly has obviously been blown away by Caden Durham this year, and rightfully so. Durham now has 530 yards from scrimmage in just six games, putting him on pace to post one of best true freshman seasons in LSU history for running backs. Leonard Fournette tallied over 1100 yards from scrimmage and ten scores back in 2014, but he was essentially gifted the starting role from day one. Durham had to fight his way to the top of the depth chart through several weeks.
If it is true that Durham is only playing at 80% to 85% health-wise, he certainly hasn't been showing it. His 22-yard run and score to open last weeks smashing of Arkansas showed every trait that makes him special. If this is him injured, SEC defenses don't want to see him at 100%.
Durham has true track speed (broke national high school track and field records with his 4×100 relay team), elite balance, burst, and awareness. Those traits should continue aiding him in his dominance of LSU's SEC schedule. We should expect to see much more from Durham all season long and beyond as he's clearly won over Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers' coaching staff.
