SEC media days are here, and it didn't take long for LSU head coach Brian Kelly to get into the action. Kelly and his Tigers start their season against the Clemson Tigers in Week 1, and he wants to make sure his boys are hungry for what could be a potential College Football Playoff matchup in December.
When asked about preparing LSU for Clemson, Kelly made it clear, “We’ve made this a specific goal.” He's gone so far as to keep Clemson top of mind with everything his Tigers do throughout their preparation.
In many ways, its reminiscent of how top teams often treat their rivalry games. Kelly is mixing it up by trying to build this game as a proving ground despite being a Week 1 test.
“We have a Clemson paw print in our weight room on the bags we hit,” Kelly added. There are also 1-0 records posted all over, projecting the team wins against their elite foe.
"Goal setting is something we're all familiar with in college football. Everyone talks about goals. We've made this a specific goal and a specific goal meaning, it's tangible for our guys…It's on every monitor in the building to go 1-0, and I think it was important to have a tangible, specific goal for us to start this season. I think it's important our kids want that they can taste it."
The all-time football record between the LSU Tigers and the Clemson Tigers is 2-2. Their matchups, all in postseason games, are as follows:
- 1959 Sugar Bowl: LSU won 7-0.
- 1996 Peach Bowl: LSU won 10-7.
- 2012 Chick-fil-A Bowl: Clemson won 25-24.
- 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship: LSU won 42-25.
Clemson is favored by three points right now, with a total of 56.5. LSU will travel to Clemson for this late afternoon kickoff.
