Last season, running back Josh Williams wore the number eighteen on offense. The number is a sign of clear leadership for a unit. Clearly, Nussmeier’s impact and commitment this offseason have proven that he is the guy to dawn it this year for the Tigers.

Why is the number eighteen held in such high regard for LSU? Matt Mauck led the football program to a national championship win in 2003, their first in nearly 50 years at the time. It was a historic victory that set that team apart from so many before it.

Nussmeier has time and time again proven his loyalty to the Tigers, spending his entire college career with the program. He has waited his turn to be their star quarterback. Now, on the back of a productive season last year, Nussmeier is primed for a potential Heisman Trophy campaign this season. He is looked at as one of the favorites for the award coming into the season.

LSU also named Garrett Nussmeier and Whit Weeks as their season-long captains for this season.
