In case you somehow missed it this past week, it was reported and confirmed that former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy was charged with negligent homicide and felony hit-and-run in relation to a car accident that took place on December 17th.
Since news of this broke nationally, speculation has unfortunately run rampant concerning Lacy's future as an NFL Draft prospect instead of focusing on the life lost (Herman Hall, a former U.S. Marine) and other physical damages done to others involved, but that's the world we live in now. For those who are wondering though, the latest update on Lacy's charges and arrest do not provide any optimism for his NFL Draft future.
Per multiple sources, Kyren Lacy reportedly turned himself in Sunday evening at 6:34pm. He was booked into jail, but barely spent an hour there before posting the bail of more than $150,000.
Lacy's agent Rocky Arceneaux apparently meant business when he released a statement late on Friday that the former LSU wide receiver would be "fully cooperating" with the authorities:
“We are aware of the allegations that have been made regarding Kyren Lacy, and we want to take this opportunity to address them. First and foremost, Kyren is fully cooperating with authorities. We strongly believe that the facts will ultimately demonstrate the truth but we respect the need for a full and thorough investigation.
We recognize the concern and questions that may arise from these recent allegations. To anyone impacted, directly or indirectly, we want to assure that this matter is being taken very seriously, and we are committed to resolving it responsibly. Out of respect for the investigation and everyone involved, we will not be making further comments at this time.”
While it's good that Lacy is fully cooperating with authorities, no new details have been released that would imply any form of innocence for him. The statement from Arceneaux saying, "the facts will ultimately demonstrate the truth", implies that the pending investigation may reveal a less terrible outlook for Lacy than how things currently stand, but no such information has emerged as of this writing. Lacy has simply (and quickly) taken the next step towards his possible longer term incarceration.
If the Louisiana State Police documentation of the accident holds true, things are not looking good for Lacy:
As Lacy was illegally passing the other vehicles, the driver of a northbound pickup truck abruptly braked and swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision with the approaching Dodge. Traveling behind the pickup was a 2017 Kia Cadenza whose driver swerved left to avoid the on coming Dodge Charger. As the Kia Cadenza took evasive action to avoid impact with the Dodge, it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2017 Kia Sorento. Following the crash, Lacy drove around the crash scene and fled south on LA Hwy 20 without stopping to render aid, call emergency services, or report his involvement in the crash.
Many in local and national media have speculated about the possible sentencing if Lacy is convicted of both negligent homicide and felony hit-and-run (with serious injury or death). That's not what we want to do here at A to Z Sports, given that the investigation still needs to play out. However, you can find the Louisiana State Legislature's breakdown and sentencing of negligent homicide here. Felony hit-and-run here. The NFL would certainly be waiting a while on Lacy should the worst case play out for him in court.
Hopefully new information is found that sheds a more innocent light on Kyren Lacy leading to (at the very least) lenient sentencing. However, LSU fans and NFL Draft folks who may be rooting for Lacy, you may want to prepare yourself for an extremely disappointing outcome.
