LSU HC Lane Kiffin has work to do to create opportunity for Tigers to land star wide receiver in transfer portal
Kiffin needs to find a way to get him on campus.
Lane Kiffin’s LSU Tigers are expected to be one of the most active teams in the transfer portal this offseason. That concept is to no one’s surprise, as the former Ole Miss head coach was known for his prowess in the portal as he consistently found ways to win battles on that front to bolster his rosters over the past few seasons in Oxford.
Michigan State wide receiver Nick Marsh is an impactful player who saw plenty of attention when he announced his intentions to enter the portal. Marsh totaled 100 receptions for 1,311 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in his two seasons with MSU. He led the team in receiving in both seasons, showing his potential as a top option in the passing game. He’s also a former ESPN 300 recruit.
LSU could still land a visit from Michigan State transfer WR Nick Marsh
According to reports, the standout transfer wide receiver already has two massive visits lined up. Notre Dame and Indiana will get the first opportunities to impress the stud wideout after the portal opened on January 2nd.
As Hayes Fawcett notes below, one more visit could be added for Marsh. If that’s LSU, then it would be a massive opportunity for Kiffin’s team and its outlook going forward.
Marsh would immediately slot in as the top WR on LSU’s depth chart. As of now, much of their proven WR talent is on the older side, so they could see some of them depart. That still remains to be seen, as Kiffin finds out which players plan to stay in the fold for his offense.
LSU has been known for their development of wide receivers over the years, helping to blossom some of the top talent in the NFL like Ja’Marr Chase, Malik Nabers, Justin Jefferson, among others at the position. Marsh could be next in line if LSU finds a way to get him on campus next week.
Notre Dame may be LSU’s biggest competition for Marsh
I discussed Notre Dame’s role in his portal recruitment and opportunity to land Marsh with Ryan Roberts, who covers the Fighting Irish.
“The minute that Marsh entered the transfer portal, he became a top target for Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish offense desperately needs a proven commodity in the boundary with Malachi Fields off to the NFL. The 6-3, 215-pounds pass catcher would fit that billing perfectly, and Notre Dame is pushing hard.
Notre Dame will not back down financially for Marsh, and he has a personal relationship with quarterback CJ Carr, which should help. LSU is the other top school to know for Marsh, but Indiana has now entered the fold. The former Spartan playmaker is visiting Notre Dame this week, and will need to impress to try and get this one done. I feel better about their chances than I did just a couple of days ago.” — Ryan Roberts, A to Z Sports
