The LSU Tigers didn’t have an easy time getting five-star cornerback Havon Finney Jr. off the open market. The Los Angeles, California, defender was once thought to be headed to Michigan, but he reclassified to 2026 to speed up his recruitment process. After some periods of uncertainty, Finney’s father offered a reassuring voice about what’s happening.
Despite continued interest from the Wolverines, Texas Longhorns, Miami Hurricanes, Auburn Tigers, and Ohio State Buckeyes, the Tigers are running away with their sales pitch. That’s because Brian Kelly and his staff haven’t backed off. Finney’s father said defensive backs coach Corey Raymond and defensive coordinator Blake Baker have continued their regular conversations.
“LSU has rolled out the red carpet for us,” said his father, Havon Finney, Sr. “That hasn’t changed. They’re very consistent. We talk to the coaches all the time.”
And that means LSU is the only team getting a visit this fall, as of now. It hasn’t hurt LSU that fellow finalists Oregon and USC have backed off, ceding the victory to the bayou staff. The expectation is for the elite cornerback to be in Baton Rouge.
The 6-foot-2, 170-pounder said early playing time and academics are his top two priorities in finding a home. He wants to be developed, of course, and LSU has been an excellent defensive back hotbed over the last few decades.
