After a disappointing 8-4 season with many of their best players departing for the NFL or the Transfer Portal the LSU Tigers needed some good news. Late on Friday that's exactly what they got, just days before facing off against Baylor in the Texas Bowl.
Harold Perkins, star linebacker who missed much of the 2024 season, has decided that he will be returning to LSU instead of declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft. Jordan Reid of ESPN shared the game-changing news for Brian Kelly and the Tigers in his post below.
This is another massive win for LSU as the 2024 season winds down. Perkins brings incredible versatility as he can rush the passer, drop into coverage, and pursues ferociously as a tackler.
Perkins kicked off his career as one of the best pass rushers in the nation posting a pass rush pressure rate around 25% as a true freshman, racking up over 40 pressures and 10 sacks. He then followed that up as a true sophomore proving he could be one of the best cover linebackers in the game with three passes defended and incredible success dropping into coverage.
This season his role was a bit undefined and inconsistent as defensive coordinator Blake Baker was trying to properly maximize his abilities, which frustrated LSU fans at times. However, Perkins should be the centerpiece of the defense in 2025 once again alongside emerging star Whit Weeks who exploded this season as the team's best defender in Perkins' absence.
The linebacker position will once again be one of LSU's key strengths in 2025 with both Weeks and Perkins entering what should be their prime productive years for the Tigers. This news mixed with Brian Kelly's Transfer Portal and freshman recruiting success is laying the foundation for a real potential run at the 2025 College Football Playoff. Let's hope things continue coming together in Baton Rouge as the offseason nears.
