Head coach Brian Kelly and this LSU Tigers staff has spent most of the offseason trying to turnover the roster. The transfer portal has been their alley so far, landing some prominent players such as wide receivers Barion Brown (Kentucky), and Nic Anderson (Oklahoma), pass rusher Patrick Payton (Florida State), and cornerback Mansoor Delane (Virginia Tech) amongst others. It looks like another key acquisition could be on the horizon.
On3 transfer portal Pete Nakos, as well as vice president of recruiting Steve Wiltfong, have each put in expert predictions for LSU to land former Houston safety AJ Haulcy. The 6-0, 215-pound safety has spent the last two seasons with the Cougars after originally beginning his career at New Mexico. During that stretch, Haulcy has been one of the more productive defenders in all of college football.
In his three seasons, Haulcy has been able to record 259 total tackles, seven interceptions, 15 pass breakups, and three forced fumbles. Five of those seven career interceptions came last season at Houston, where Haulcy was named as a First Team All-Big 12 selection, and a Phil Steele All-American Honorable Mention.
While Haulcy isn’t the smoothest athlete of all time, he does bring a big body that isn’t afraid to mix it up in the run game. The Texas native also is incredibly instinctive and possesses notable ball skills. Quite simply, Haulcy has a great habit of always being around the football.
The cornerback position got a massive makeover this offseason, but safety is still the weak spot of the defense on paper. There aren’t many proven players in that spot, and this team could very much use a proven playmaker. That’s what Haulcy would bring to the table, a proven commodity and playmaker.
Miami is the other top program who has been prioritizing Haulcy in a big way. They have reportedly put out a substantial offer, but LSU has not backed down. In order to land the services of Haulcy, it is expected going to be compensation in the multi-million range. It appears Haulcy is heading to Baton Rouge unless something changes late.
