The LSU Tigers are searching for a new head coach after firing Brian Kelly earlier this season. LSU’s top target is believed to be Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin.

According to reports, LSU arranged for a plane to pick up Kiffin’s family on Monday to tour Baton Rouge.

The Florida Gators are also in hot pursuit of Kiffin. Ole Miss, meanwhile, is trying to convince Kiffin to stick around in Oxford.

LSU reportedly had conversations with Nick Saban

Kiffin is at the top of the list for LSU in large part because former Tigers head coach Nick Saban, who turned 74 last month, appears to be uninterested in coming out of retirement to address unfinished business in Baton Rouge.

Football Scoop reported on Monday that LSU had “conversations” with Saban, noting that it sounds like the legendary head coach doesn’t want to return to coaching.

“Conversations were had with Saban, several sources told FootballScoop,” read the report. “But it sounds like the seven-time national champion coach — who won a title at LSU in 2003 — has decided he doesn’t want to step back into things.”

Most fans assumed that LSU had at least reached out to Saban. Now we know that some conversations did happen between the two sides, but it sounds like Saban will continue to enjoy retirement and his cushy gig at ESPN.

So, in other words, back to Kiffin watch for the Tigers (and the Gators, and the Rebels…and probably the New York Giants).
