The LSU Tigers have been retooling their roster this offseason as Brian Kelly and company try to make one final push towards a national championship with veteran quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in 2025. The Tigers brought in the number one overall Transfer Portal class and a top tier freshman group too, but one pivotal question still remains.
Which new playmakers are going to step up immediately, potentially carrying LSU to the College Football Playoff this year?
Through early spring practices it seems the team has at least one answer there already.
Barion Brown, star transfer LSU Wide Receiver
Garrett Nussmeier talked about how important many of the transfers LSU acquired would be back in December, as he was the driving force behind acquiring several of the incoming playmakers.
The team brought in a trio of high profile transfer wide receivers in Barion Brown (Kentucky), Nic Anderson (Oklahoma), and Destyn Hill (Florida State), but it's Brown that seems to be making the most noise for LSU right away (as you can see in the post below).
For those familiar with Barion Brown and his insanely versatile game, it shouldn't be surprising to hear and see that he's already standing out. Dating back to Brown's freshman year at Kentucky he was an immediate starter and game-changer for that offense and on special teams. He splashed onto the SEC scene with an impressive 1,094 all purpose yards and five total touchdowns as a true freshman on just 70 total touches. Since then he's just gotten better.
Brown now holds the SEC record for most kick return touchdowns in conference history (with 5) and when called upon he can add value in every phase of the game. In fact, not too long ago Brown put up over 220 all purpose yards in a single game against Clemson, scoring rushing, receiving, and return touchdowns all on the same day.
The early reviews are already in from LSU practice and Brown is showing some of the flashes that convinced them to add him via the Transfer Portal this offseason. If that continues Brown likely locks in the important role that Kyren Lacy played last year where he will be lining up just about everywhere around the formation as the team's potential lead wide receiver.
Brown still has to beat out some returning competition like Zavion Thomas and Chris Hilton Jr., but it's looking like he should be in line to play a near every-down role paired with returning star WR Aaron Anderson and fellow incoming transfer Nic Anderson. Either way, we should expect to hear plenty more good things out of spring camp from Barion Brown.
