The first half of Boston College's season opener against Florida State on Monday night was not what anyone expected.

The Eagles came out strong, with former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien making his head coaching debut for BC. And they managed to put up 14 unanswered points on Florida State.

And former NFL quarterback Matt Ryan was loving every second of it.

"Kids in bed… @BCFootball up 14. Pretty good Monday night," he posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

At halftime, the Seminoles managed to get six points back, but it was still the Eagles who had the lead. And they started the third quarterback with a bang, coming away with an interception and turning it into an additional seven points.

Ryan played at Boston College, starting in 2003. He redshirted his first year, and then was named the starting quarterback prior to the 2004 season.

He remained with the Eagles for all four years, and earned many awards and honors. Specifically, in his final season, Ryan won the Manning Award, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, and was named ACC Player of the Year. He also was first-team All-American by AFCA, first-team All-ACC selection, and named the ACC Player of the Week 6 times.

Because of his success in 2007, Ryan was drafted in the first round with the third overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

Ryan played for the Falcons for 14 years, before joining the Indianapolis Colts for a season in 2022. He was released in 2023, and officially announce his retirement on April 22, 2024, signing a one-day contract with the Falcons.

He finished with 5,551 completions for 62,792 passing yards and 381 passing touchdowns, along with 515 carries for 1,539 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.

It's a new regime for the Eagles, who brought in O'Brien this season after former head coach Jeff Hafley left to become the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.
