Miami Hurricanes picked up another enormous win in the month of January, but this one came off the field
The Hurricanes’ 2026 outlook appears set to get a huge boost.
The Miami Hurricanes walked off the field at Hard Rock Stadium on January 19 just short of claiming the program’s first national championship since 2001. It was a bitter end to a tremendous run through December and January after the Canes were the last at-large team in the playoff field.
One of the reasons they came up short was good but perhaps not great quarterback play from Carson Beck. While Beck certainly contributed to the Hurricanes’ success, including a big fourth quarter in the Canes’ 31-27 Fiesta Bowl win over Ole Miss, Miami’s strong ground game and dominant defense were the engines that drove the Canes to the national championship game.
With Beck out of eligibility, it appeared as though Miami was heading into an offseason without an experienced quarterback solution, especially after whiffing on Sam Leavitt and Ty Simpson.
However, hope arose with the news that Duke’s Darian Mensah was seeking to enter the transfer portal, with Miami the expected landing spot. That was derailed temporarily when Duke filed suit to enforce its NIL agreement with Mensah. The Blue Devils won a temporary restraining order that prevented him from enrolling in another school last week.
Now, the path is cleared for Mensah and Miami to finally unite. Mensah and Duke reached a settlement that the Blue Devils announced on Tuesday, which allows him to enroll at Miami, which is expected by most outlets.
Duke confirms settlement with QB Darian Mensah, freeing his expected move to Miami Hurricanes
Duke issued the following statement:
“Duke University Athletics and Darian Mensah have reached a resolution that enables both parties to move forward.
“We are committed to fulfilling all promises and obligations Duke makes to our student-athletes when we enter into contractual agreements with them, and we expect the same in return. Enforcing those agreements is a necessary element of ensuring predictability and structure for athletic programs. It is nonetheless a difficult choice to pursue legal action against a student and teammate; for this reason we sought to resolve the matter fairly and quickly.
“Duke remains dedicated to the welfare of all student-athletes, and we appreciate them for the talent, dedication, and commitment to excellence they demonstrate both on and off the field. We also remain committed to upholding the integrity of our athletics programs and institutional guidelines. We thank Darian for his contributions to Duke University.”
With Mensah now free of his contractual obligations with Duke, he’s set to join the Hurricanes. With Mensah, the Hurricanes’ offense jumps up another couple of gears. Mensah was second in the nation in passing yards last season for the Blue Devils with 3973 yards and was tied for second in passing touchdowns with 34, throwing only six interceptions.
In addition to Mensah, star Duke WR Cooper Barkate is also expected to join the Hurricanes, per On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos. Barkate led Duke with 72 catches for 1106 yards and 7 touchdowns last season.
What a difference a week makes — and has made — for the Miami Hurricanes’ 2026 outlook.
