The Miami Hurricanes are in the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, securing the No. 10 seed and final at large spot in the field over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Miami will play No. 7 seed Texas A&M in the first round on Saturday, December 20 at noon ET in College Station, Texas.

The game is projected to be a close one, with the Aggies sitting at around a 4.5-point favorite over the Hurricanes. If Miami can pull off the mild upset, they’ll achieve something that no college football program in the state of Florida has done to date: win a CFP game.

Miami can become the first winner of a College Football Playoff game in the Sunshine State’s history

The College Football Playoff first came into existence in the 2014 season. Florida State made its first and only appearance in the event that year, bowing out to Oregon in the Rose Bowl in a 59-20 blowout. The Noles were poised to potentially return in 2023 as a 13-0 ACC champion, but they were left out of the field in favor of 12-1 SEC champion Alabama.

Meanwhile, the Florida Gators have never made the field. Neither has USF nor UCF.

Setting new marks in Florida is nothing new for the Hurricanes. The Canes brought home the state’s first-ever national championship in 1983 after defeating the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl 31-30. They became the state’s first-ever undefeated national champion in 1987 at 12-0. Their five national championships are the most by any program in the state.

Beating Texas A&M will obviously be a major challenge for the Hurricanes, but if they can find a way, advancing in the playoff bracket would be terrific progress for a Miami program that continues to ascend step by step under Mario Cristobal. And with the way things have been going for Florida State and Florida for many years, it’s looking like the Hurricanes should continue to carry the state’s banner on a national scale for at least the near future.
