The Miami Hurricanes are now just two days away from the start of their first-ever College Football Playoff game. The Canes and Texas A&M Aggies will square off in College Station in the first of three playoff games taking place on Saturday.

With almost two weeks between selection Sunday and the start of the playoff, there’s been plenty of time for interviews and public comments by players on both sides. Miami’s players have kept from giving A&M any added motivation going into the game.

However, the same can’t be said about the Aggies. OL Trey Zuhn III raised eyebrows on selection Sunday when asked about stopping star Miami DE Rueben Bain, Jr. “I don’t think he’ll be a threat that we need to worry about too much,” Zuhn said.

RB Rueben Owens II gave Miami some additional fuel when talking about Miami’s talented run defense.

“I wouldn’t say it’s much of a challenge,” Owens said. “I know my guys. They’re ready for the challenge. It’s been like that a couple of games. The Mizzou game. They said they had a good run defense. We put up over 200 rushing yards. So, I just feel that once we just align, do our assignment, put the effort in, we’ll get the job done.”

Bain finally got the chance this week to respond to the comments from his upcoming opponents, and Bain grinned and had a short and simple but telling comment in response.

Rueben Bain, Jr. said ‘God bless those guys’ regarding A&M players who had some eyebrow-raising comments about him

“God bless those guys,” Bain said. “They’re just playing football the way they play it.”

Bain took the relative high road in the situation, it was clear with the smile and chuckle and “God bless those guys” comments he wasn’t a stranger to what’s been said over the last week and a half by his opponents.

Bain has been known to use negative comments and/or articles about him as fuel, as he indicated after Miami’s 26-7 win over the Florida Gators this year as well as following the Canes’ win over Notre Dame. He’s also been the subject of a lot of conversation on social media this week regarding his supposed shorter arms and the ability to succeed as an edge rusher in the NFL.

So, as far as motivation goes, if claiming the school’s first national championship since the 2001 season was enough of a reason to be playing with his hair on fire, he certainly has plenty more fuel to put in his tank on Saturday at Kyle Field.
