The Miami Hurricanes have had some incredible teams going back over 40 years. Studded with future NFL stars, Miami had some impressive squads that went on to compete for national championships year after year while rolling up the competition along the way.
On Saturday night, the 2024 incarnation of the Miami Hurricanes outdid every prior Miami team in one particular statistical category.
It its thrashing of the South Florida Bulls 50-15 at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday night, the Canes totaled 209 points through their first four games of the season. That's the most points through four games in program history, per the ESPN broadcast.
Cam Ward continues his march towards an invitation to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in December, putting forth another incredible performance on a national stage. He completed 24/34 attempts for 404 yards with 3 touchdowns and an interception that shouldn't even be credited to him in all fairness. Jacolby George took a picture-perfect throw in the first quarter and bobbled it up into the air, turning a potential huge gain into an interception.
The heroics of Ward and the offense helped lift Miami after its defense struggled for much of the first half, allowing 15 points (which should have been 18 if not for a missed chip shot field goal before the half) after conceding long, time-consuming drives.
After Miami fell behind 15-14 late in the second quarter after an 8 minute, 30-second field goal drive, Ward lobbed a ball to Sam Brown, who caught it full stride and beat the safety up the sideline for a 76-yard touchdown. Miami never looked back again, notching touchdowns on all four drives in the second half before running out the clock on their final one.
The 50 points is the team's third straight 50+ total of the season after posting a 41-17 win at Florida to start the season. No matter how you slice the competition, posting that many points – and doing it with a starting offense that doesn't find itself playing at least a quarter per week on average so far – is an impressive accomplishment and speaks to the extremely high level the offense is operating at with Ward under center.
It's just the beginning, as the team's just reaching the 1/3 mark of the regular season. However, it's proof of just how much a difference an impact player at QB can make for a roster.
We'll see if Ward and the Canes can continue this run as their ACC schedule gets underway on Friday against Virginia Tech.
