Former Miami Hurricanes safety Kamren Kinchens had a forgettable combine back in February. With a 40-yard dash time of 4.65, his draft stock suffered as a result.
On Sunday in the Los Angeles Rams' 26-20 overtime win, Kinchens proved that track speed and football speed are very different things as he raced free across the field with the football in his hands.
Kinchens turned in a career day, picking off two passes and returning one for a 103-yard touchdown, the longest pick-six in Rams franchise history.
With the Seahawks about to take the lead early in the fourth quarter of a tie game, Kinchens and the Rams defense had other ideas. DE Byron Young got pressure on Geno Smith off the edge and forced an errant pass, which Kinchens was waiting for. He then zoomed through traffic and sprinted away from everyone for the game-changing score.
That's pretty ironic, given what the narrative was on him about his speed, or supposed lack thereof. At this point, executives should know the difference between football speed and 40-yard dash times. Kinchens clearly has the former.
The rookie followed that up with a diving interception later in the quarter to stymie the Seahawks again.
You don't just become a first-team All-American by accident. It takes instincts, athleticism, and an innate playmaking ability. Kinchens showed all of those things in 2022 with a tremendous season for the Miami Hurricanes. A down year in 2023 for Kinchens and the Miami defense tarnished that performance a bit it seems.
However, the Rams still believed and pulled the trigger on Kinchens in the third round of the NFL Draft back in April. And now, they've got an intriguing young playmaker on their defense for years to come.
If only teams had kept their eyeballs on the film instead of testing numbers, they might have had one instead.
