The Miami Hurricanes' chances of landing the top player in the 2026 recruiting class appear to be getting more and more faint.
It didn't seem awesome for the Canes' chances of landing Nixa, Missouri five-star OL Jackson Cantwell when the big offensive lineman announced he would be committing on April 30 right after taking an official visit to Oregon.
Now, things seem even more dire, with another major college football power pushing their way to the top. Cantwell pushed his commitment date back from April 30 to May 13 in order to take a visit to Georgia on May 10.
As such, it seems as though the Bulldogs could be the team to beat for Cantwell's services, as confirmed by On3 Sports recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong giving a crystal ball prediction for Cantwell to commit to Georgia.
It goes without saying that Cantwell is a massive priority for Mario Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal. Cristobal has a big advantage of being offensive line-oriented coach and having developed a number of notable NFL players like Penei Sewell, Cam Robinson, and Jonah Williams. That's something that Cantwell had talked about previously about the Hurricanes and is a feather in the Canes' cap when it comes to his recruitment.
However, as Wiltfong notes in his article on Cantwell's prediction, he has a strong relationship as well with Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searels, who's maintained regular communication with the standout recruit. That, and the Bulldogs' success putting players in the NFL, is in Searels' and Kirby Smart's corner when they try to close the deal with Cantwell on May 10 in Athens.
We'll find out soon enough if the Canes can find a way to stay in the race for the top overall recruit.
