Georgia QB Carson Beck announced on Friday afternoon that he has committed to the University of Miami.
Finding an answer at quarterback became an obvious pressing need after the second half of the Canes' 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the Pop Tarts Bowl. After Cam Ward exited the game at the half after throwing three touchdown passes, Emory Williams took over under center. Saying it was a struggle would be an understatement. Williams finished 5/14 for 26 yards with an interception, as Miami came from ahead to lose the game in the final seconds thanks in large part to an anemic offense down the stretch.
The Hurricanes appeared to be up a creek without a paddle after swinging and missing on Washington State transfer John Mateer, who ended up at Oklahoma. However, everything changed quickly this week.
After initially indicating an intent to enter the draft, Beck changed course and entered the portal this week with a "do not contact" designation. While Beck was believed to have been listening to offers, Miami always seemed like the logical option, given he's from Florida and his girlfriend, Hanna Cavinder, plays on the Miami Hurricanes' women's basketball team.
Beck will provide an immediate shot in the arm to the Canes' offense giving Miami a puncher's chance to follow up or improve upon their ten-win campaign in 2024. In his last two seasons at Georgia, he threw for 7426 yards with 52 touchdowns to 18 interceptions. In 2023, he led the SEC in completions (302), attempts (417), and passing yards (3941).
It's hard to imagine Beck having quite the same impact Ward did in 2024, but if Miami can shore up its disastrously poor defense this offseason, he surely won't have to for the Canes to make another run at the ACC title and College Football Playoff.
