There’s an old saying: if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. And there’s at least a possibility that could end up being the case with the Miami Hurricanes and former foe DJ Lagway.

On Monday, multiple outlets revealed that the Florida quarterback would be entering the transfer portal less than two weeks after the Gators hired former Tulane head coach Pat Sumrall. Lagway confirmed that with his own message on Twitter (X) on Monday.

As for where he could end up, according to On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos, Miami could be in the picture, along with Baylor and LSU.

Miami listed by On3 Sports as a school to watch for Florida QB DJ Lagway

Miami is certainly a logical destination for a number of reasons. First, Mario Cristobal has shown a willingness to go into the portal to find a starting QB, and it has worked out very well over the last two years.

Cam Ward shattered school records in 2024, was a Heisman Trophy finalist, and was the #1 overall pick in the NFL Draft back in April. Carson Beck has led the Hurricanes to their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance as the Canes notched back-to-back 10-win seasons for the first time in over 20 years. I’d say the portal approach is working out pretty well.

Miami has also shown a willingness to pay top dollar for transfer QBs – Beck is said to have earned around $4 million this year in NIL money – and in today’s world, that’s clearly a top factor for many players.

Miami faced Lagway twice in lopsided wins by Miami over Florida over the last two seasons. This year, Lagway started and went just 12/23 passing for 61 yards and was sacked four times in the Canes’ 26-7 victory. He threw 16 touchdowns to 14 interceptions on the season.

As such, Cristobal and his staff will likewise have to decide if they think they can get out some untapped potential from the soon-to-be-former Gator. If so, then the Canes will be a strong suitor for his services in 2026.
