Miami Hurricanes Week 13 rooting guide: The Canes have to have a specific result to keep ACC hopes alive
Miami has to get some help in Atlanta on Saturday night.
The Miami Hurricanes moved up multiple spots in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday, inching up to #13 in this week’s rankings and remaining the highest-ranked ACC team.
However, the Hurricanes still need a lot of help in order to make the ACC Championship game as well as at large consideration in the playoff field. So, here’s what Canes fans should be rooting for come Saturday in both the ACC and at large playoff races.
Miami has to have Pittsburgh beat Georgia Tech to stay alive for the ACC Championship game
Pittsburgh over Georgia Tech
The Hurricanes” biggest and most important game on Saturday by a mile is Pittsburgh beating Georgia Tech. It absolutely has to happen for the Hurricanes to have a shot at making it to Charlotte for the ACC title game. A Georgia Tech win, and Miami is eliminated. Simple as that.
Louisville over SMU
The “we beat Miami” bowl needs to go the way of the Cardinals (who now have 3 ACC losses) and see SMU pick up ACC loss #2.
UNC over Duke
The Blue Devils have two losses, but there’s still a world where they could win a tiebreaker over Miami at 6-2 in the ACC, so Canes fans should be rooting for the Blue Devils to pick up ACC loss #3 in Chapel Hill this weekend.
Miami needs some Big 12 and SEC chaos on Saturday for at large help
There are some lame games that won’t go Miami’s way on Saturday (E. Illinois at Alabama, Syracuse at Notre Dame), but there are some notable matchups to discuss.
Missouri over Oklahoma
If Mizzou gets starting quarterback Beau Pribula back, then this game gets quite interesting. But without him, Missouri’s offense has been stagnant, and OU’s defense is one of the best in the country.
Cincinnati over BYU
This game could be interesting (2.5-point spread) and at night at Nippert Stadium, an upset is a legit possibility. This would knock the Cougars out of the picture and allow Miami to move up further.
Kansas State over Utah
Not likely, but Kansas State is up and down. If the up version comes to Salt Lake City, this could be closer than expected (Utah -17.5)
Oregon over USC
Some might argue the other way, but it’s not clear if the committee would drop Oregon below Miami, and USC could be prime to jump Miami if they beat the Ducks on the road. Also, Notre Dame’s only decent win is USC, and them losing helps ding their resume.
Maryland over Michigan
There’s been talk that Michigan beating Ohio State could make things interesting. Not if they have three losses when they play them.
Kentucky over Vanderbilt
Don’t hold your breath here, but the Wildcats have waxed Florida and taken Texas to overtime this year. So Vandy picking up loss #3 here isn’t out of the question and would be helpful to keep them off Miami’s back.
USF over UAB
Yes, the Canes’ second-best win is over the Bulls, and they hurt the Canes last week with a loss to Navy. At this point, they just need to do the best they can and get to 9-3, and that starts with a win over the Blazers in Birmingham on Saturday.
