The Michigan Wolverines rightly used Central Michigan as their “get right” game on Saturday, dominating in their huge 63-3 victory. Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall crushed Central Michigan on the ground. The defense was suffocating. Most importantly though, Bryce Underwood was completely unleashed, showcasing his five star talents.

After the game, interim head coach Biff Poggi (due to Sherrone Moore’s suspension) couldn’t help but express his amazement at Bryce Underwood, highlighting and summing up the key to Michigan’s incredible performance on Saturday.

Bryce Underwood could apparently be coached up by Biff Poggi’s labrador retriever

Biff Poggi has been known over the years to share some colorful quotes, and he was at it again in Michigan’s post-game press conference on Saturday. When asked about Bryce Underwood and his impact in the run game, Poggi had this to say:

“I have a labrador retriever who could coach that guy. He’s unbelievable.”

Underwood racked up 114 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns on just nine carries. He averaged nearly 10 yards per pass attempt outside of just one interception on the day. Underwood constantly flashed his athletic ability and arm talent all day long.

Underwood hit his receivers and tight ends on a few nice plays throughout the game, but the one key to Michigan’s dominance early on (when it was still a game) was Bryce Underwood just using his God-given abilities as a runner to extend plays and keep defenses on edge. Poggi continued on that fact:

“Sherrone really wanted to open things up with [Bryce Underwood] a little bit when he felt it was the right time to do so…Chip Lindsey really took that mandate and did a good job…You’re a defense, you played two plays really well, and you think you’re getting off the field, and this kid extends the play with his legs. Those things are heartbreaking for defenses…He’s gifted. I mean, you all saw that. He is gifted. I’m glad we’ve got him.”

Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey did listen to the critics (and head coach Sherrone Moore), and finally implemented a few more called run plays for Bryce Underwood. But even when it wasn’t called, Underwood still found a way to blow the Central Michigan defense away with a huge play (like on the scramble TD in post below).

Underwood might not always put up over 100 yards on the ground, but it’s clear Michigan has begun to utilize one of his greatest strengths. Wolverines fans should expect to see plenty more of that as the toughest parts of Michigan’s schedule are ramping up soon.
