ESPN placed Michigan's situation in tier four (the "young pups" tier). Even as head coach Sherrone Moore is focused on the recruiting trail entering summer, his quarterback competition looms large.

Other programs in this tier include Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Washington.

Even after landing senior passer Mikey Keene from Fresno State, who has 1,170 career passing attempts, the Wolverines likely fall here due to Bryce Underwood. The top quarterback recruit from the 2025 class is all but guaranteed to see the field as the starter at some point this year.

Here's the analysis for this tier.

Four schools with playoff hopes turn to young QBs with elite recruiting backgrounds. Not long ago, this wouldn't seem like a wild premise, but in the era of the transfer portal, the notion that programs with as much talent as Notre Dame or Ohio State are putting their fates into the hands of QBs with no on-field experience feels akin to handing your teenager, who has his learner's permit, the keys to your new Ferrari.

There's a lot of projection with Underwood based on his traits and impressive high school tape. In some ways, Michigan probably benefits in their tier ranking compared to Oregon, which was in Tier 5 because Dante Moore wasn't good as a true freshman at UCLA.

Underwood and Keene may both be better than Moore, even if Keene has major size limitations and Underwood is new to college. But is it possible either will be a star in 2025?

Absolutely, and the expectation is for Underwood to be excellent in time.

But we have no idea whether that will be the case until we see each of them under the bright lights.
