The Michigan Wolverines shocked the college football world on Wednesday evening with the firing of head coach Sherrone Moore for cause, following an investigation for inappropriate behavior with a female staffer.

This whole situation has rocked the college football world, especially considering the potential fallout of his firing and the domino effect it could have across the country. One potential domino of this surrounds Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood. The former No. 1 recruit flipped his commitment from the LSU Tigers to Michigan shortly before Early Signing Day, partly due to a record-setting NIL deal. After a full year as the starting quarterback under Moore, however, this situation has immense ramifications for Underwood’s future with the Wolverines.

It’s safe to say that the Wolverines (whoever will be running the search) will likely be basing their search around a coach who can unlock and develop Bryce Underwood to deliver on his status as the No.1 recruit in the country and the highest-rated quarterback in Michigan history.

On3’s Pete Nakos is reporting that Underwood and his camp “will be paying close attention to the search” for Michigan’s next head coach. Sources tell me that Underwood will be involved in the search, but to what degree is unknown at this time. What makes this decision even more interesting is that the record-setting deal the Wolverines handed to Underwood does not include a buyout, according to Nakos, meaning Underwood would be able to transfer essentially without cost.

The lack of a financial penalty and the murkiness of this whole situation only deepens the pressure on Michigan to get the next hire correct and quickly. Underwood was already committed to an LSU program with Brian Kelly at the helm. It’s hard not to envision him being intrigued by returning to the Tigers, this time under Lane Kiffin. Other top-tier programs like the Oregon Ducks could also be involved, depending on their quarterback moves in the offseason. Former LSU players and fans have already begun making pitches to Underwood.

For now, there’s still time left and obviously an entire coaching search for Michigan to run. However, the pressure is on for them to deliver immediately before the fallout of this reaches critical mass, or else Underwood – and other building blocks of the program- might not be in Ann Arbor for the next coach to begin with.
