Colston Loveland had been rising up NFL mock draft boards in the last week, and a handful of insiders around the league and A to Z Sports sources had hinted that both top tight ends could go earlier than expected in the first round, but most experts still fully expected Tyler Warren of Penn State to come off the board first.

Why were so many NFL Draft "experts" wrong about which tight end would go first? And why does it make total sense for Colston Loveland to be the TE1 in the 2025 NFL Draft class?

First off, many people took one look at Tyler Warren's production last season (over 1400 yards from scrimmage and 12 touchdowns) and just assumed he was the best player in the nation. He also brings balance to his game with very few weaknesses. However, Colston Loveland has a few key things that set him apart.

Despite far fewer catches and receiving yards last season (just 56 receptions for 582 yards), Colston Loveland is by far the most dynamic and reliable receiver among all tight ends in the 2025 NFL Draft class. He dominates at every level of the field, and nearly outproduced the entire wide receiver room at Michigan last season while playing with some of the worst quarterback play in the history of the program.

On top of the receiving dynamism he's a great scheme fit for Ben Johnson's offense that not only wins as a receiver, but does so from all varieties of pre-snap alignments and post-snap assignments. Then the cherry on top is that Loveland just turned 21 years old less than a month ago. He still has plenty of room for development.

Colston Loveland is the real deal. So much so that he is now the first Michigan tight end taken this early in the NFL Draft since Paul Seymour in 1973 to the Bills. Loveland should plug in as an immediate near every down player and operate as the team's de facto WR2 or WR3 at the tight end position. Bears fans should be excited. Michigan fans know greatness is coming in Loveland's near future because they've already seen it firsthand.
