Former Michigan Wolverines center Moussa Diabaté was involved in a huge melee between the Charlotte Hornets and the Detroit Pistons earlier this week.

Diabaté, who is in his second season with the Hornets, had an on-court altercation with Pistons center Jalen Duren.

The altercation had been brewing for a while, but it hit a crescendo when Diabaté, likely in response to an elbow earlier in the game, got in Duren’s face.

Duren responded by mushing Diabaté’s face.

Hornets forward Miles Bridges and Pistons forward Isaiah Stewart, who was on the bench at the time, also got involved in the ruckus.

The NBA handed down suspensions for the fight on Wednesday.

Moussa Diabaté releases statement on fight between the Hornets and Pistons

Diabaté, also known as “the moose”, released a statement on Wednesday about the fight.

And it has one of the best lines I’ve ever seen in any statement: I look forward to many more nights where the Moose Gets Loose — just not that loose!

To the Hornets coaches, staff, front office, teammates, and the best fans in the NBA: As a player, I pride myself on my passion and my commitment to giving everything on the court during every possession. However, in the heat of a highly competitive and physical matchup, I allowed my emotions to get the better of me, and for that, I am truly sorry. I understand the responsibility I carry as a professional athlete and as a role model, and I view this as a learning experience. I am fully committed to growing from it both as a player and a person. The Charlotte fan base has been incredibly supportive since I joined the team, and it is my goal to continue making a positive impact on the Hornets organization and the Charlotte community as we continue to ascend. I look forward to many more nights where the Moose Gets Loose — just not that loose! Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Emotions run high when athletes are competing. Things happen. But at least Diabaté took accountability while bringing some levity to the situation.

Michigan fans, by the way, are well aware that this isn’t Diabaté’s first time being involved in a fight on the basketball court.

Diabaté was suspended one game for his involvement in the post-game scuffle between Michigan and Wisconsin in 2022.
