J.J. McCarthy has been rising up 2024 NFL Draft boards faster than any other prospect in the class since early February. As I discussed earlier this week, McCarthy went from day two pick to early first round lock in a matter of days. As of today, it's looking more and more like he could go inside the top four picks in the NFL Draft!
As it became clear that the Giants were interested in J.J. McCarthy over the past week rumors started to grow that the Vikings might not just have to trade up with the Giants, up they actually may try to move ahead of them to get their guy. Today's Michigan Pro Day certainly doesn't seem to contradict that possibility.
According to Albert Breer, the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings have general managers and quarterback coaches present to see J.J. McCarthy up close and personal at the Michigan Pro Day today.
J.J. McCarthy was expected to work off a 58-throw script for his pro day workout today in front of all his potential NFL Draft suitors, but after a teammate tweaked a hamstring in the 40 that number might be throttled a bit.
J.J. McCarthy is now the betting market favorite to be selected at pick four in the NFL Draft (29% implied odds). The other two most likely spots being pick five and six (both 19% respectively). All together the sports books are saying there's a 67% chance that McCarthy is selected between picks four and six. If that's the case, the only two QB-needy teams who likely have the pick ammunition to make it happen without dismantling their franchise's future are the Giants and the Vikings.
If the Giants and Vikings staffs both like what they see from McCarthy today we might see some major trade-up fireworks on draft night with one of those teams making a move to pick four or five to "get their guy" for the future.
