Over the last month, the preeminent worry for the Michigan Wolverines hasn’t been their search for a new head coach, which led them to hiring Kyle Whittingham. It was the future of quarterback Bryce Underwood, the biggest recruit the Wolverines have ever pulled in and one of the brightest stars they’ve had in the Maize and Blue.

After the Sherrone Moore saga unfolded, the rest of college football came sniffing around to try and pull Underwood away from the Wolverines. Fortunately for fans of Michigan and for the future of the team, Underwood has once again chosen to stay home and play for the Wolverines

Bryce Underwood decision biggest win for Kyle Whittingham

It’s impossible to really overstate how important of a win this is for Kyle Whittingham and the future of the Wolverines’ program. Even if they built a strong coaching staff, keeping Underwood had to be their top priority, as without him, an exodus of players would likely begin, and the Wolverines would have to embrace a complete reset of the entire team.

Instead, they can focus fully on building around Bryce Underwood in new offensive coordinator Jason Beck’s scheme. Underwood is a tremendous fit with Beck and the style of offense he wants to run, and the arrow can remain firmly pointed up for his development.

Keeping Underwood also gives the Wolverines some ammunition in pursuit of transfer portal targets. Already, players like Darrell Gill Jr., Isiah Canion, and other receivers are working on setting up visits with Michigan, and having a player with the star power of Underwood fully embracing the program could be crucial in recruiting those players.

With a steady hand at the helm in Whittingham and an offensive coaching staff much better equipped to support Underwood than anything he had this season, the sky feels like the limit for Underwood’s development. Now, the priority becomes building around him and players like Andrew Marsh and Savion Hiter for the future of the program.
