The Michigan Wolverines navigated what was one of the most troubling situations in recent memory after the Sherrone Moore saga following the end of the 2025 season. One of the key lighthouses that allowed the Wolverines to emerge relatively unscathed was general manager Sean Magee, who played a significant role in retaining most of Michigan’s roster when the vultures descended after Moore was fired.

Despite that, new head coach Kyle Whittingham is ready to make his mark on the program, and that comes with bringing in his own guys instead of holdovers. On Tuesday morning, the Wolverines parted ways with Magee and other staffers to clean house, allowing Whittingham to install staffers that fit his vision.

Kyle Whittingham ready to make his mark at Michigan

Magee started at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh, working as a manager of player personnel and football operations from 2017 to 2021. After spending two seasons with the Chicago Bears as their Chief of Staff, he returned to Michigan as general manager alongside Sherrone Moore.

With the Wolverines, Magee was a key figure in the deal to land quarterback Bryce Underwood as well as an elite pair of recruiting classes and transfer portal hauls in his two seasons at the helm. This year, Magee kept the team afloat throughout the fallout of the Moore saga when the team could have simply collapsed and been picked apart.

There has been some discussion around Magee’s firing as it relates to the investigation into the department following the Sherrone Moore saga. As far as I am aware right now, this move is entirely related to the football side, and is a case of Whittingham wanting his own guy at the helm. That could be subject to change, and we know that there will be fallout throughout the athletic department when the investigation concludes, but this does not seem to be one of those.

Now that Kyle Whittingham has his feet under him as head coach, he is ready to make waves, and that starts with reforming the front office for complete organizational alignment. Magee has been a coveted front office figure at both the NFL and collegiate level, and I would expect him to land on his feet fairly quickly.
