Latest news completely derails Michigan Wolverines head coaching search, turning the program into desperation mode to replace Sherrone Moore
Kenny Dillingham has elected to stay home, while Kalen DeBoer stays winning. What will the Michigan Wolverines do now?
The Michigan Wolverines have spent the last week and a half searching for their next head coach, following the shocking firing of Sherrone Moore last week. The Wolverines have been pushing hard to have their new head coach as soon as possible, and the administration has relayed its desire to have a coach in place by Jan. 1, the day before the transfer portal window opens.
Those plans got a monkey wrench thrown at them over the weekend, as within a span of less than 12 hours, both of Michigan’s top candidates are now seemingly no longer possible. Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer won on Friday, pushing his timeline back and making it nearly impossible for him to align with Michigan’s desired hiring timeline.
On Saturday, the Wolverines’ other top candidate, Kenny Dillingham, signed an extension to remain at his alma mater, Arizona State. With their top two candidates virtually off the board, the question remains: Now what for Michigan?
Michigan’s head coaching search nearing disaster levels
There’s no sugarcoating it: Michigan’s head coaching search fell apart rapidly, and now it has to scramble to return to candidates it may or may not be fully bought into.
I, along with other Michigan websites, reported that the program had already eliminated Washington head coach Jedd Fisch as a serious candidate after the vetting process concluded because something surfaced in his background checks. However, they might have to bite the bullet and bring him back into the picture with their top two candidates gone.
Eli Drinkwitz just signed an extension to remain at Missouri, and while he has a cheap buyout, his resume isn’t impressive enough to warrant the payday Michigan would have to pony up. Will desperation change that?
Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm will remain connected to the job as one of the top candidates left, and he has yet to sign his extension with his alma mater. Yet Brohm withdrew from the Penn State search, and there’s no indication he would be willing to leave anytime soon.
Former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham has reached out to the program, but at 66-years-old, there are a lot of split opinions on him as a serious candidate to lead the Wolverines for the future. He’s an excellent coach, no doubt, but Michigan doesn’t want to be going through this process again in 2-3 years.
It’s also worth mentioning interim head coach Biff Poggi as a possibility to just remain as the head coach. This would feel like an absolute worst-case scenario, as it would mean that the Michigan Wolverines could not pull a single head coaching candidate from anywhere in the country. Poggi went 6-16 at Charlotte in his only time as a head coach in college, but he’s well-liked around the program.
At this point, Michigan’s coaching search is on the verge of complete disaster. What was once a promising search has evaporated overnight, and Michigan’s left grasping at straws and hoping some miracle candidate appears.
It’s safe to say that there have been better times for the Wolverines. At least they have basketball.
