The college football world has been left stunned in the wake of the Michigan Wolverines firing head coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday morning and the subsequent saga that has spiraled out since then.

Given that Michigan is coming off of a 9-3 season, it seemed unlikely that this firing had anything to do with anything football related, and those suspicions were confirmed on Wednesday evening, as Moore was placed under arrest at around 4:10 PM EST.

Now, more details have come out surrounding the arrest, and a clearer picture is beginning to emerge with just how this story got to this point.

New details in the Sherrone Moore arrest emerge

According to several sources and beat reporters, Michigan had been investigating Moore for months, and evidently wasn’t going to do anything about the situation. The Wolverine, Michigan’s On3 affiliate, reported that the investigation was “very limited” and very little was done. It was a “poorly kept secret” that even the players knew about. The situation was evidently so poorly handled that “figures of influence” (i.e. the people at the very top of the university, such as the Board of Regents) are both embarrassed and furious, and as of 1 PM EST on Thursday have employed an independent law firm to investigate the entire department.

This prompts the question: what changed to force Michigan’s hand? That news came to light on Thursday afternoon, as Michigan historian and author John Bacon reported that the female staffer, Paige Shiver, came forward to the Michigan administration with all of the details of her and Sherrone Moore’s relationship.

At that point, Michigan was compelled to move forward and ultimately ended up firing Sherrone Moore. What prompted the staffer to “come clean” about the whole situation is ultimately unclear at this time, but evidently, it was her part in this that began the sequence of events that led to Moore’s arrest.

According to Bacon, after it appeared Michigan would fire him, Moore allegedly proceeded to break into the female staffer’s home and threatened to harm both her and himself with a knife. TMZ and other news sites have obtained audio logs of the 911 dispatch call that state that the “subject [Moore] appeared suicidal over the loss of his job today.”

This is an ongoing investigation, and details are slow to come as the police and everyone involved maintain the integrity of the investigation, as well as the lives affected by the incident.
