After a roller coaster of a coaching search, the Michigan Wolverines have finally found their 22nd head football coach, hiring former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham to replace Sherrone Moore. Whittingham has already begun assembling a strong staff to join him in Ann Arbor, and the Wolverines have a coach with as deep a winning pedigree as there is in college football.

At the forefront of Michigan’s coaching search was its potential impact on quarterback Bryce Underwood. Michigan’s administration wanted to keep Underwood’s development central to their process, particularly in an effort to keep him in Ann Arbor. As soon as Sherrone Moore was fired, the vultures began circling to pull Underwood from the Wolverines.

Fortunately for the Wolverines, Underwood already seems plenty intrigued by Whittingham’s track record and sounded excited to meet with him for the first time over the weekend.

Bryce Underwood “excited” for Kyle Whittingham

At Michigan’s first media availability since the hire of Whittingham was announced, quarterback Bryce Underwood was intrigued by what Whittingham will bring to the program, but admitted he didn’t know much about him.

“Very excited to figure out what kind of guy he is,” Underwood said. “I don’t really know too much about him. I’m just excited to figure out what kind of guy he is. I saw his resume a little earlier today, actually, so I’m just excited to ask him a few questions, get to that point, and things like that.”

Whittingham doesn’t have a long history of NFL quarterback development, but his quarterbacks have long been more productive than any in Michigan’s history. Michigan has just two 3,000+ yard passers in the history of the program. Whittingham had two in the last seven seasons alone.

Underwood’s future with the Wolverines is something he won’t “officially” decide until after Michigan’s bowl game against the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl next Wednesday. If you’re a Michigan fan, however, today’s impromptu presser would be one I would be encouraged by for keeping Underwood in Ann Arbor.
