It still feels a bit surreal that the number one recruit in the nation, quarterback Bryce Underwood flipped from the LSU Tigers, joining Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines, but it really happened.
There were plenty of rumors as to why Bryce Underwood made the switch, most of them having to do with a massive NIL deal reportedly coming his way, but LSU's NIL fund is one of the most impressive in all of college football. There had to be more to Underwood's flip than just the money, right?
Obviously, the answer is yes, and just this week Underwood revealed a handful of the reasons that contributed to his flip from LSU to Michigan when he joined the Big Ten Network for a special interview.
Underwood revealed a small preview of the reasoning behind his flip to Michigan in his official commitment video late last fall. And in case you missed his special hype video back when it released you can check that out in the post below.
Obviously a kid growing up in Belleville, Michigan, a small town situated just 25 minutes from the Michigan campus would grow up idolizing Michigan and their many football stars. His commitment video opened with him as a kid pretending to commit as a football recruit many years ago. But beyond the sentimental "team of his youth" reason, when asked about why he joined Michigan, Underwood had this to say:
"Honestly, the legacy that comes with [attending and playing for Michigan], the resources, and also the great education that I will have. Those are the main big factors that impacted this decision that I made."
Michigan's winning legacy, the development of professional quarterback talents like Tom Brady and J.J. McCarthy, the vast resources at a strong program, and top tier education certainly creates an enticing package for any young football player to pursue.
But perhaps more than anything, a personal relationship with the greatest quarterback of all time wouldn't hurt either. Underwood described his meaningful new relationship with Tom Brady as he continues to stay in touch with the GOAT:
"I talk to Tom Brady. That's one of the biggest [new relationships I've formed], and the main one that I've talked to, so it's just a great experience to have with that [since signing with Michigan]…[Brady told me] how much of a great player that I am, and how much potential that he sees in me, and how much better I could be."
Underwood seemed ecstatic about his relationship with Brady, but also went on to share how he sees head coach Sherrone Moore. It's clear that his respect for Coach Moore didn't hurt his recruitment either.
"[Sherrone Moore] has a lot of grit. He's willing to push to the end and be the best he could possibly be no matter what the cost."
While the massive NIL deal certainly helped, it's clear that Bryce Underwood took into consideration a bevy of reasons why Michigan was ultimately going to be the best fit for him. The relationships. The legacy of national championships and the pinnacle of NFL greatness achieved by Wolverines before him. And a coaching staff that had Michigan on a ridiculous hot streak to end the season.
There was plenty to get excited about with the Michigan program even before Bryce Underwood committed, but now that he's in the fold the sky is the limit.
