Michigan Football was already going to have to replace more than 20 top contributors from their national championship roster heading into the 2024 college football season. Unfortunately, it looks like they'll now have to replace one more.
According to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports and CBS Sports, Rod Moore, star safety for the Michigan Wolverines, tore his ACL during spring practice on Monday.
Moore decided to return to school despite garnering mid-round projections from dozens of NFL Draft analysts over the last several months. This injury news is both jarring and sad for a player who was set to be one of the most important defensive players on the Michigan defense in 2024.
Michigan had already lost Keon Sabb to the transfer portal as he joined Alabama Football this spring. Mike Sainristil and Josh Wallace left for the NFL. Now that they've lost Rod Moore, Michigan will be missing four of their top six defensive secondary members from last season's dominant squad.
Will Johnson is still going to be an elite lock down corner on the outside, a first round projection for 2025. And Makari Page is a versatile seasoned veteran who can play most any safety, box, or slot role. So yes, they will still have two proven defensive backs for the 2024 season. But depth gets questionable quickly.
The Wolverines will now likely have to lean heavily on Quinten Johnson, a sixth year player who saw his first significant snaps last season. Their third safety position will now likely be a wide open competition to watch for the rest of spring practices.
Expect Michigan to pursue a safety via the Transfer Portal when it opens again on April 16th.
