Star QB Bryce Underwood’s status update after Michigan fires Sherrone Moore amid ‘inappropriate relationship’ scandal
What should Bryce Underwood decide to do following Michigan’s dismissal of head coach Sherrone Moore?
Just when you thought the College Football coaching carousel was slowing down, things get even crazier. On Wednesday, the University of Michigan fired head coach Sherrone Moore with “cause.” Multiple reports have surfaced since the initial report that Moore had been investigated, and evidence had been found that he had a relationship with a staff member.
Now that Moore is out of the position, there will be a million questions asked. Who will be the next head coach will lead the conversation, but what happens with star quarterback Bryce Underwood will follow shortly after. Everyone should remember the Underwood commitment from the 2025 class, including the massive NIL deal from Larry Ellison that managed to pull him away from his LSU commitment.
In the wonderful world of the transfer portal and NIL, things can change so quickly. Coaching turnover typically causes widespread roster turnover, and there is reason to believe that could be the case in Ann Arbor. As other programs eye the talent on the roster right now, Underwood’s will stick out like a sore thumb.
Status update on Bryce Underwood
While doing some digging and checking in with sources around this situation, one thing is certain: This isn’t over, and things will get messier. The aforementioned relationship wasn’t just a recent thing, I’m told. This whole situation has been going on for some time, as the investigation was being conducted to search for evidence.
In preparation for this terrible news, the Michigan front office has been working diligently on the back end to prepare for the fallout. Those members have been doing their absolute best to keep everyone updated as much as they were permitted, while also preparing for life after Moore. Keeping Underwood in the maize and blue was about as important a task as any other outside of finding their next head coach. These types of talents at quarterback don’t come around very often.
According to a source, there has been a strong effort to ensure that Underwood is a part of the future plans and that this news doesn’t force him into the portal. While the Michigan staff feels good about its chances of retaining the talented signal caller right now, they “aren’t out of the woods just yet.” The Underwood family will want to see who the next head coach is and how effectively this program can retain the top talent during the aftermath of the Moore news. The next couple of weeks will be crucial.
The transfer portal will be open Jan. 2 to the 16th, but with Moore’s termination, all Wolverine players will get 15 days starting now to enter the portal. That will give them two different windows to leave Ann Arbor, which is an additional hurdle that the Michigan staff will have to deal with. All eyes will be on Underwood, and if he does leave, there will be a long list of suitors for the talented true freshman.
Perhaps LSU will get another chance at Underwood after all.
Bryce Underwood – The talent
At around 6-4 and 228 pounds, the Michigan native is an impressive blend of size, arm strength, and athleticism. His freshman year had some ups and downs, which should have been expected with the supporting cast around him. In 12 games, Underwood has thrown for 2,229 yards and nine touchdowns. He has also added another 323 rushing yards and four more scores on the ground.
With three years of eligibility remaining and all the talent in the world, the sky is truly the limit for what Underwood can accomplish on the college level. Will he decide to be the bridge of hope for Michigan’s future, or is putting himself in a better situation best for him?
Either way, you can bet that everyone will be watching. Other schools will just be watching a bit more intently after the latest news.
