It's been less than six months since Jim Harbaugh's national championship Michigan team sent 13 players on to be selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, but it's already apparently time to look ahead to next spring.
Through five weeks of the college football season, top NFL Draft experts believe that Sherrone Moore's Michigan squad is stacked yet again. Pro Football Focus published their latest mock draft this week put together by one of their long time contributors Trevor Sikkema. Michigan looks like they could seriously have four star players selected inside the Top 15 picks!
PFF had defensive lineman Mason Graham going to the Cincinnati Bengals at pick four, cornerback Will Johnson going to the Los Angeles Rams at pick eight, defensive lineman Kenneth Grant going to the Arizona Cardinals at pick nine, and tight end Colston Loveland to the Indianapolis Colts at pick 11.
This shouldn't surprise Michigan fans to see three defensive superstars coming off the board early since the Wolverines have been phenomenal on that side of the ball again. However, seeing any offensive player going that early might be a bit jarring to the average college football fan considering Michigan's offense ranks outside the Top 100 by most every meaningful measure.
Huge NIL donor for Michigan and Sherrone Moore confirmed, but will they actually fix the QB situation?
Can Michigan actually fix their QB situation with one NIL donor?
Colston Loveland has hauled in nearly half of all the receiving yards in the games he's played for Michigan thus far. And despite teams knowing that he's quite literally the only viable offensive target on the team Loveland is still winning his matchups.
Will Johnson already has two pick-sixes and four total passes defended with opposing quarterbacks averaging an NFL passer rating of 51.4 according to PFF. That passer rating is just barely above the equivalent of an incomplete pass being thrown.
Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant have continued their dominant interior play, both logging double-digit pressures through the first five weeks and excellent tackle efficiency.
It's still early, but at least these top four players (and possibly more) for Michigan are looking like potentially elite NFL prospects. The Wolverines desperately need a few more offensive players to step up, but it's good to see the defensive talent is still strong enough to carry the team.
