One of the biggest spectacles in sports took place on Sunday, as the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots to win Super Bowl LX.

Arguably, the play that clinched the Seahawks’ win featured a former Michigan Wolverine. TE A.J. Barner scored the Seahawks’ only offensive touchdown in the game to extend the Seahawks’ lead at the time to 19-0. A point total the Patriots would never exceed in the game.

Seeing a Michigan man find the end zone likely brought a smile to Wolverine fans everywhere. To make it even sweeter, it helped Michigan outshine its longtime rival, the Ohio State Buckeyes, with more than 100 million people watching.

Former Michigan TE AJ Barner scored a touchdown for the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, more than any Ohio State player

There were highly drafted Buckeyes who played key roles for both the Seahawks and the Patriots. The NFL’s offensive player of the year, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, was with the Seahawks, and the NFL’s top WR, TreVeyon Henderson, flashed a lot of skill this year as a rotational back for the Patriots.

In this game, both were afterthoughts, though. Smith-Njigba finished with four receptions for 27 yards, and Henderson finished with 45 total yards with six rushes and three receptions. Barner had more yards than both with 54 receiving yards, and he did something neither was able to accomplish: score a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

Michigan’s winning streak against Ohio State came to an end last season, but the Super Bowl seems like a good omen for what’s to come next year.

The Wolverines’ new leadership, led by head coach Kyle Whittingham, will be tasked with getting the football program back on the right track. That includes competing for Big 10 and National Championships, but it starts with dominating Ohio State every chance they get.
