Sometimes in the NFL players that are not exactly expecting to make an impact early on in their careers have to be called upon due to unfortunate circumstances.
That is the case for former Michigan Wolverines team captain Zak Zinter. Zinter was a third-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2024 NFL Draft and he appears to be on the brink of starting his first game.
Zinter has plenty of playing experience as a guard from his days at Michigan but is about to take the tough step-up of being a starting guard in the NFL at least for a few weeks. Zinter was called into action in the Browns’ Week 3 loss to the New York Giants when right guard Wyatt Teller had to exit with a knee injury.
Overall against the Giants, Zinter stepped in and played 34 snaps (51 percent). In his time against the Giants, Zinter allowed just one pressure. It is notable that the Browns gave up eight total sacks to the Giants, but none of those were from the former Michigan standout.
Zinter’s career at Michigan ended in an unfortunate way in 2023 when he suffered a tibia and fibula injury against Ohio State in the last regular season game. Zinter was a three-time All-Big Ten selection while with the Wolverines and played in 45 career games with the Wolverines.
As far as his first start, that will likely come on Sunday in Week 4 when the Browns travel to take on the Las Vegas Raiders. Cleveland is dealing with more offensive line injuries than just Teller, so it will be interesting to see the unit that he lines up with. You can count on former Ohio State standout Dawand Jones being on his right side.
