Michigan Wolverine defender using hatred for Ohio State in a very unique way to prepare for underwhelming Week One opponent
The Michigan-Ohio State hatred never dies
When you talk about the great rivalries in all of college football, there is none quite to the same level as Michigan versus Ohio State. Both of those programs have a hatred for the other, and the fan bases are included. That rivalry is so intense that Buckeye fans refuse to use the letter “M” leading up to those rivalry games. It gets about as heated as you will see, and it is a great part of college football.
Even when head coach Sherrone Moore and the Michigan program aren’t playing Ohio State, they still use them as motivation. In a recent media availability, Wolverine starting safety Brandyn Hillman discussed their season-opening matchup against New Mexico. The Lobos wear a similar color scheme to Ohio State, and Hillman has clearly noticed that. It has become a unique way for him to get pumped up for the matchup on August 30th.
“You know, how I look at it is, they got the same colors as fu***** Ohio State,” Hillman said.
The Wolverines probably don’t need to flip much of a switch to come out with a victory against New Mexico, but the extra help in preparation can’t hurt anything. The Lobos are traveling to the Big House, and the odds are firmly against them. Hillman is excited for a junior season, his first as a full-time starter.
The Virginia native earned a starting spot down the stretch of the 2024 season after serving mostly as a special teamer during his time in Ann Arbor. At 6-0 and 200 pounds, Hillman was a high school quarterback at Churchland High School, and he has slowly been developing into a really talented defender. His combination of size, explosiveness, and versatility brings a lot of possibilities to the table. In 11 games in 2024, Hillman managed to collect 17 total tackles, one pass breakup, and a half of a tackle for loss.
If Hillman’s performance against Alabama in the bowl game was any indication, you should expect a huge jump this upcoming season. Folks around the maize and gold are excited for just how good Hillman can be on the back end of the defense.
Ranked as the No. 14 team in the country to begin the year, some are expecting Michigan to have a bit of a bounce back season. Everyone will have their eyes on the November 29th date when Ohio State travels to Michigan. The Wolverines have won four straight games against the Buckeyes, and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day will be hoping to reverse that trend.
