The Michigan Wolverines are pooling together a strong roster in Kyle Whittingham’s first season as head coach, but there are some areas of the roster that are particularly thin and needed a boost in the transfer portal. One of those areas was at safety, a position that struggled throughout the last two seasons with numerous players involved. Most of the room hit the portal, and the Wolverines needed to restock.

However, they got the best news possible for this room on Friday. Superstar safety and leader of the team Rod Moore was officially granted his medical hardship waiver, giving him another year of eligibility, allowing him to return to the Wolverines for one more season.

Rod Moore returning resolves frequent problem for Michigan’s secondary

A third-team All-Big Ten selection, Moore appeared in 12 games with 11 starts in 2023. He logged 38 tackles, including 1 for loss, and 2 interceptions, helping Michigan win the national championship and Big Ten title with a perfect 15-0 record.

Moore spent the last two seasons rehabbing from an offseason injury following Michigan’s national championship season in 2023. He underwent two different surgeries for this knee injury. His loss has been keenly felt over the past two seasons, as the Wolverines’ secondary frequently busted coverages and lacked his playmaking ability no matter who they tried along the back end.

Moore tried to return in 2025, but never looked 100% and sustained some other minor injuries that forced him to shut it down and apply for a medical redshirt for this season.

With Moore back, alongside new transfer portal pickup Chris Bracy from Memphis, the Wolverines return plenty of experience to the back end of their secondary. I still expect the Wolverines to perhaps add one more name at safety to give them depth with multiple years of eligibility to replace Jaden Mangham, TJ Metcalf, and Brandyn Hillman, who all elected to enter the transfer portal.
