Could Michigan Wolverines back up Bryce Underwood with elite two-sport star recruit in 2026 class?
The future of the Michigan Wolverines offense is set with quarterback Bryce Underwood set to take over under center sometime in the near future. However, behind him is plenty of uncertainty. Mikey Keene will graduate after next season, and Jadyn Davis is probably not going to see the field for the Wolverines. If Bryce Underwood […]

However, behind him is plenty of uncertainty. Mikey Keene will graduate after next season, and Jadyn Davis is probably not going to see the field for the Wolverines. If Bryce Underwood were to go down with an injury, Michigan needs to have a talented backup plan behind him just in case.
Which is why the team is fervent in their pursuit of 2026 star quarterback Matt Ponatoski. A two-sport star in both baseball and football, Ponatoski recently acquired a Michigan offer to play both sports for the Wolverines.

The buzz around Michigan has been loud, thanks to the imminent arrival of elite five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, who represents the future of the Wolverines' program. I don't think any recruit has generated as much intrigue and excitement as Underwood has done for the Michigan program. The anticipation isn't just in Ann Arbor, however. National […]
Ponatoski caught fire his junior season, earning the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Ohio. The Wolverines will have to fend off the likes of Texas A&M, Louisville, and other high-end schools to secure his commitment, but he can be a talented option to play in relief of Underwood.
According to On3, the Wolverines have a secret weapon in their recruitment of Ponatoski: former teammate and current Michigan signee Jordan Marshall. Marshall is close friends with Ponatoski, and the two talk almost daily.
With Marshall helping and Ponatoski's relationship with Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, it's obvious to see how much the Wolverines have in their corner to help secure the commitment of this talented two-way player. As the interest in Ponatoski grows nationally, however, it'll be a tough race to the end to keep him interested in Ann Arbor, especially if he feels he can start on a different team.
