The Michigan Wolverines and Sherrone Moore continue to trend towards building an elite recruiting class. Thanks to another four star recruiting flip this week that makes four new commits in the month of July, and Michigan finds themselves firmly in the mix to land several more top talents.
How close is Michigan to officially locking a possible top five recruiting class and how much did their four star flip of Jordan Deck impact their chances there? Let's dive in.
Jordan Deck recruiting flip pushes Michigan close to elite class status in 2026
Jordan Deck, a four star safety from the state of Texas just flipped from Baylor to Michigan earlier this week. Deck profiles like an early impact player with great length, strength, and instincts.
Deck's impact could prove to be far greater than his middling four star rating suggests given Michigan's likely need to revamp the defensive backfield following this fall. With Rod Moore and a handful of defensive backs departing there will be a huge need there beyond this season. Deck becomes the third defensive back commit in Michigan's 2026 class, and gets the Wolverines' team ranking back up into the top ten overall in the nation according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.
Michigan's path to a top five recruiting class
Deck's singular commit led to Michigan rising up just behind a huge tier of elite recruiting programs in both the 247Sports Composite and the Rivals Industry Rankings. They currently sit just behind schools like bitter rival Ohio State, Texas, LSU, and Oregon.
Michigan's average recruit rating is currently just below all four of those big brands, but thanks to Deck's flip it wouldn't take much to push the Wolverines up into the top five in the country for the 2026 recruiting cycle.
The Wolverines actually still have a path to landing a few players who have elite recruiting rankings this fall as well. The path is to "elite" 2026 class is quite possible now.
Five star running Savion Hiter has Michigan firmly entrenched as one of his finalists, with several recruiting experts around the country confident that this race is really between the Wolverines and Tennessee.
High, high four star defensive back Davon Benjamin is also still considering Michigan. Some believe Oregon might be leading here, but this is the kind of recruit that could give Michigan the best defensive back class in the nation.
Two-way high end four star Salesi Moa looks like a Utah lean (his in-state school), but still has Michigan in the mix too. All three of these players are top 50 prospects in the entire country.
All it would take is one or two of those high pedigree recruits and perhaps one to two more four star role player projections to finally push Michigan's 2026 recruiting class over the top, giving them one of the deepest groups the program has ever put together. Michigan fans just need to hope the momentum carries into the season, and that shouldn't be a problem considering all the excitement surrounding five star quarterback Bryce Underwood.
