After days of College Football Playoff talk and disagreement, the Michigan Wolverines decided to crash the party of controversy when announcing that they had fired head coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday afternoon. Following a 9-3 regular season record in his second season, there clearly had to be something more to this decision. It was clearly not a decision made just for something that happened on the field.

No, there was a lot more to that story, and it didn’t end after the termination was announced at 4:43 Eastern time. From the actual reason behind Moore being fired, and his arrest that came after the fact, there are a lot of pieces to the puzzle that need to be put together. It’s natural that rumors are going to be out there, some being true, while others have no factual backing.

Here is everything you need to know about Sherrone Moore, his dismissal from the Michigan Wolverines, his legal issues, and how we have gotten here. It’s been quite a wild ride, and it hasn’t even been 24 hours yet.

Sherrone Moore fired by the University of Michigan

When those tweets started surfacing on social media about Moore’s firing, it was met with a lot of shock and disbelief for a large portion of the college football fan base. Group chats became flooded with the news, and that’s where speculation began. Seeing that Moore was fired “for cause” certainly created a lot of theories, educated guesses, and even more speculation.

In two seasons with the team, Moore finished with a 17-8 overall record. He had previously spent eight years on the Michigan staff, serving in various roles, including being responsible for coaching the offensive line, tight ends, and he also served for three years as the offensive coordinator. Before that time in Ann Arbor, Moore spent time with both Louisville and Central Michigan when his college coaching career began in 2009.

The reason behind Sherrone Moore being let go

Shortly after the speculation began, reports began to surface about “the cause” of the termination. Coach Moore had been found to have engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. That staff member was later determined to be Paige Shiver, whose title with the team was Executive Assistant to the head football coach. She is the daughter of current Chicago Bears scout Jeff Shiver.

Moore, who is a husband and father of three, being involved in this affair is the extent that we know about the relationship between him and Shiver right now. There are some other rumors flying around concerning that relationship, but none have been verified enough to be taken as factual. As things do get surfaced, they will be added to this section in particular.

The timing of the Moore firing

Upon verification, this is not an issue that has just popped up recently. An investigation was conducted internally about Moore and his off-field conduct. Until things were fully verified, action would not have been taken. This was not just a one-time occurrence, however, or something that popped up on the Michigan radar just this week.

It is my understanding that the Michigan staff has been working diligently behind the scenes to soften the impending blow as much as possible. That is most notable in the side of roster attention. A certain high priced quarterback Bryce Underwood was of the biggest concern.

Sherrone Moore arrested following his termination

After Moore was fired, most expected the craziness to die down a bit until more facts got out there. That was until Moore was booked in Washtenaw County Jail at 8:30 PM on Wednesday night. While the full extent of the incident that got Moore arrested has not been released yet, it has been confirmed as an alleged assault.

“The incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community,” Pittsfield Township police said in a media statement Wednesday night, released by chief of police Patrick Gray.

“At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details.

“Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as possible.”

The incident in question took place at a staffer’s residence. There are a lot of details that are going to come out about the situation. That will need to happen after due process, as will knowledge for how the police were able to track down Moore and his whereabouts for him to be arrested.

Incident update

Prosecutors said Friday that Moore forced entry into the staff member’s apartment and said, “I’m going to kill myself. I’m going to make you watch. My blood is on your hands. You ruined my life.”

What’s next for Sherrone Moore?

On3 report Pete Nakos reported on Thursday that Moore was scheduled to be in court and arraigned on Friday for that alleged assault charge. That is the next point of potential information, but the bulk of the truth will continue coming up after the process is nearing the end.

Prosecutors charged Moore with one felony on Friday, third-degree home invasion and two misdemeanors: stalking in a domestic relationship and breaking and entering. Bond was set at $25,000.

The women’s admission and supporting evidence led the school to quickly dismiss Moore for cause, saying he violated both his contract and university policy. Michigan will not have to pay Moore the nearly $12.3 million remaining on his deal, because he was fired for cause.

Some of the conditions that are part of Moore’s $25,000 bond include GPS tether monitoring, no contact with the victim, and orders not to go to the victim’s residence. There is a probable cause conference set for Jan. 22.

For Michigan, they will now be tasked with finding a new head coach. Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is an early name worth mentioning, as is current Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. These are just a couple of early names, and this search will begin materializing a lot more soon.
