The Michigan Wolverines landed a big splash in the transfer portal Friday evening.

Indiana transfer wide receiver Donaven McCulley announced his commitment to Michigan out of the portal.

The Wolverines have been pursuing McCulley for months, ever since he first entered the portal in October. He visited Michigan twice, including right after their upset victory over Ohio State.

Still, McCulley bided his time and visited other schools, including a successful one with Oklahoma earlier this week. However, Michigan's committed push for McCulley for months won them the day.

A former quarterback turned wide receiver, McCulley has caught 66 passes for 834 yards and eight touchdowns in his career. McCulley initially entered the portal last season but was convinced to stay by incoming head coach Curt Cignetti. However, the promises fell through, and McCulley entered the transfer portal in October.

McCulley has only played wide receiver for three seasons, but his talent is evident at the position. He's a gifted mover in space and excels at using his frame (6'3, 205) to make difficult catches look routine. Indiana frequently threw him jump balls and low-percentage throws that he snagged with ease. He has terrific hands as well with just three drops in his career. While he won't take the top off of a defense with his closer-to-average speed, he still makes for an effective vertical threat with his size and contested catch ability.

McCulley still has room to grow as a route-runner, but I came away relatively impressed by his ability to consistently find holes in zone coverage and work open.

Michigan fills offensive coordinator position with surprising hire of former head coach

The Michigan Wolverines have zeroed in on their next offensive coordinator hire, per reports. According to CBSSports's Matt Zenitz, the Wolverines are hiring former Troy head coach and current North Carolina offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey to serve as their next offensive coordinator.  The Wolverines fired former OC Kirk Campbell a full week ago after a […]

These traits are going to be important ones for the Michigan Wolverines, who return little to no talent in their wide receiver room. They don't boast a player like McCulley either. Their leading returning receiver, Semaj Morgan, is just 5'10. Beyond him, the Wolverines have little to no proven players, especially ones that can separate or win in the red zone like McCulley can.

This is a quality addition for the Wolverines, who look to rebound from a disappointing 2024 season.
